The unit has application in qualifications for Master or Chief Mate on a vessel of less than 500gross tonnage or more operating in international waters or for a Watchkeeper on an ocean-going vessel of 3,000GT or less, i.e. in additional skills set for Master (Less than 500GT) beyond the Diploma of Transport&Distribution(Maritime Operations - Deck Watchkeeper). However, the unit is also applicable to qualifications for Masters of vessels up to 3,000GT operating in near coastal waters, i.e. Diploma of Transport&Distribution(Coastal Maritime Operations - Master Class 3).
UNIT DESCRIPTOR:
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to manage safe navigational watchkeeping on a commercial ocean-going vessel in compliance with Australian and international regulations and guidelines, protection of the marine environment and the safety of the vessel and persons on board. This includes vessels of 500 GT or less in the case of a Master or Chief Mate and vessels of 3,000 GT or less in the case of a Watchkeeper.
